The Illinois Historic Cemetery Handbook: A Guide to Basic Preservation was developed in response to many inquiries from the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (IHPA) and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). Those questions often focused on how to clean and repair gravestones, sources of assistance, and the laws that govern cemeteries.

This is the second handbook in three manuals on historic cemetery preservation in Illinois. This document focuses on assessment, planning, probing, cleaning, and simple resetting. The first document was entitled Illinois Historic Cemetery Preservation Handbook: A Guide to Basic Preservation and focused on research, planning, and documentation. A third manual will focus on using mortars, heavy lifting, and more complicated repair and resetting techniques.

Graves and cemeteries are important features of our cultural landscape. Marking a burial place reflects a human need for a hallowed site of remembrance. Although a grave commemorates an individual's physical remains or spiritual passing, cemeteries are communal expressions of observance. Cemeteries are the outgrowths of the communities that create them. They are focal points for family, religious, or ethnic celebrations that honor the dead and foster a sense of group identity among the living. As settlement patterns and communities’ attitudes toward death have changed, so have the sacred spaces associated with remembering the dead. For these reasons, cemeteries provide insight into the beliefs and values of past generations.

Significance of Historic Burial Grounds and Cemeteries The historic burial grounds and cemeteries of Massachusetts are vital elements of the Commonwealth's cultural heritage. They are often the oldest surviving remnants from the early years of a community and represent important social, historical, architectural, and archeological artifacts. In addition to their historical value, many of these significant cultural landscapes must also meet contemporary needs.

There are hundreds of historic cemeteries in the state of Michigan. However, until the publication of this manual, anyone wishing to undertake the conservation and preservation of these historic cemeteries had to search through numerous and often conflicting sources for information. There was no comprehensive source outlining sound conservation and preservation practices. With the publication of this manual, endorsed by the State Historic Preservation Office, individuals and communities now have one reliable source.

Following the 2001 National SCV Reunion in Lafayette, Louisiana (my first), I found a great diversity in techniques for cleaning, restoration, and methods of marking veterans. After asking if there was a uniform recommendation, the answer I received was “NO.” The next logical question was, “Why not?” The answer was no one had ever written one. Well, I decided to step in and rise to the occasion.

There are over 700 recorded cemeteries in South Australia. Most cemeteries around the State, in both rural and urban areas, are under the care and control of Local Government, churches, or cemetery trusts. Cemeteries and places of historical and cultural significance frequently contain remnant native vegetation, much of which no longer exists in the surrounding area.

Cemeteries constitute an essential and diverse feature of South Carolina’s heritage. In some, imposing entrances or intricate cast-iron fencing enclose collections of beautifully carved stones and monuments.

The South Dakota State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) compiled this handbook to introduce historic preservation commission members, local government staff and officials, and other interested parties to the field of historic preservation. Because most of South Dakota’s historic preservation commissions are also Certified Local Governments (CLGs), the handbook contains information on the CLG program and its annual grants. An appendix of reference information appears at the end of the handbook.
