The African American burials are in the fenced-off area to the left of the white arch. The old chain link fence has always separated this. The African American section is in severe disrepair; many of the stones are gone, graves are sinking, etc. Whitmire is one of the oldest and largest cemeteries in Escambia, Co., Florida. Several historians say graves date back to 1830 and the Civil War.
