Windsor’s Burying Place was first laid out in 1637 on a small parcel of land behind the site of the First Church and was expanded in 1657. Early wooden markers are long since gone, and even stone markers are not immune to the ravages of time. The First School Society, which owns and maintains the cemetery, has carefully preserved this ancient place, notable for its oldest markers carved in local brown stone by early Connecticut stone masons.
The cemetery has a large number of markers of veterans, ranging from the earliest conflicts like King Philip’s War, the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War, and on into the modern era. The Abigail Wolcott Ellsworth Chapter of the Connecticut DAR has worked for over 100 years to preserve the historical inscriptions and gravestone inventory.
