The cemetery was established in1884 to serve the mining and ranching community. It contains roughly 130–150 marked graves (with many more unmarked), including early miners, ranchers, railroad workers, and pioneer families.
The site is especially associated with the Grigg family, who have lived in Hackberry since the 1890s. Six generations of the Grigg family are buried here, making it a multi-generational family plot within the larger cemetery.
